The short version: we collect only what the app needs to work, we don't sell your data, we don't run ads or tracking, and you can delete everything yourself.

Who we are

Unwrap is an independent app that helps people understand what's in their food. It's made by Edward Barnes, an independent developer in the UK, who is responsible for your data.

What we collect

If you use Unwrap as a guest (no account)

  • Nothing that identifies you. Your scan history stays on your phone.
  • Receipt text — the text is read on your phone and sent to our server so we can match the items. The photo itself is never uploaded.
  • Barcodes we don't have — if you scan something that isn't in our database, we count that barcode (and nothing about you) so we know which products to add next.
  • No analytics or tracking tools of any kind.

If you create an account

  • Email address — to create your account and send account emails. You can sign up with email, Apple or Google.
  • Display name, if you set one.
  • Scan history and receipts — synced so you can see them on any device.
  • Which Unwrapped Education files you download from the website, and when — so we can count how widely the free lessons are used. Nothing else is recorded and it is never shared.

If you choose to contribute

  • Products you add — name, brand and ingredients, which join the shared product database.
  • Photos of labels you submit, so a product can be added or checked.
  • Reports about incorrect products, ingredients or allergens, linked to your account so we can follow up.

If you subscribe or tip

  • Purchase history, handled by Apple or Google Play. We never see your payment details.

What we use it for

  • Running the app and syncing your data across devices.
  • Sending account emails, such as password resets.
  • Reviewing products, photos and reports people submit.

We don't sell your data, share it with advertisers, use it for targeted advertising, or track you across other apps and websites.

Where it's stored

Account data is stored with Supabase, on servers in Zurich, Switzerland, which the UK recognises as providing adequate data protection. Data on your phone is kept in the app's own encrypted storage. We keep your data until you delete your account.

Your rights

You can ask for a copy of your data, have it corrected, or have it deleted. The quickest route is in the app: Profile → delete account removes your account and everything attached to it. For anything else, email us.

If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at .

Children

Unwrap isn't aimed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you think we have, email us and we'll remove it.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that matters, we'll say so in the app or by email.
